Slieve League

Hike amid dramatic coastal scenery at this magnet for walkers and nature enthusiasts on the southwest coast of County Donegal.

Experience the awe and majesty of Slieve League, a series of spectacular cliffs that rise above the Atlantic Ocean. Walk along cliff paths, investigate isolated coves and spot dolphins and whales on a boat tour.

Slieve League lays claim to being the highest accessible sea cliffs in Europe and reaches a height of 1,972 feet (601 meters). They form part of the Wild Atlantic Way, a coastal route that extends across the west coast and parts of the north and south coasts of the Republic of Ireland. For more than 1,000 years, Christian pilgrims would travel here. Ancient stone remains found in the area also suggest the cliffs were a pilgrimage site before the arrival of Christianity.

Park your car by the visitor center and take the 20-30 minute walk up to the main viewing point. From here, enjoy spectacular views of the rocky coastline, Donegal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Experience more of the wild coastal scenery on one of the walking trails. There are routes for all abilities.

Take in views of Slieve League from the sea by going on a boat tour, which includes stop-offs at rocky coves. During your trip, you may even see basking sharks and dolphins that regularly visit local waters. Tours depart from Teelin Pier, which is about a 10-minute drive from the cliffs.

Located in Donegal Bay, Slieve League is 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Donegal Town. Drive and use the free car park. Note that the visitor center is closed. The official opening may take place in 2018. When it is open, it will feature exhibits about the geology, flora and fauna of this part of the coast as well as its religious links.

For additional coastal adventures, drive for about 3.5 hours east of Slieve League to the Gobbins, a dramatic path that clings to the side of the cliffs, traversing bridges and passing through tunnels.
