Eat lunch at the restaurant, stay in the campsite and see the wild horses at this family-friendly, developed beach area.

Sun Bay is among the most popular and active beaches on Vieques. Overlooking picturesque Cayo de Tierra (Earth Cay), this long and wide beach is one of the few options on the island with many amenities and a restaurant. Bring your family to spend the afternoon on this accessible and dynamic stretch of sand.

Walk between the countless palm trees that sway in the breeze along this beach. Notice the range of exotic vegetation, including noni plants, flanking the strands. Enjoy a swim in the crystal clear, warm Caribbean Sea. Its waves are calm and the water is warm and shallow, making the area ideal for children. Bring your kids to see the horses grazing in the meadows behind the beach.

Rent a deck chair and sunbathe under the blazing sun. Remain until sunset for mesmerizing views. You can spot Monte Pirata in the distance to the west and Earth Cay just across the water.

Dine on seafood at the restaurant or purchase snacks and drinks. The beach is fairly busy in the afternoon, although it is large enough to never feel full. Find your own space and lay down a blanket on the sand or in the shade of a palm tree.

Stay at the campsite beside the beach and sleep beneath the stars, with the calming sound of crashing waves. You can also stay in a hotel in the nearby town of Esperanza.

Note that the beach charges a small entrance fee. Lifeguards are usually on duty during the day and bathroom facilities are available.

Find Sun Bay on the southern coast, a little west of the island’s center. It is about a 20-minute walk east from the heart of Esperanza and a 15-minute drive south from Isabel II. See nearby landmarks, including Media Luna Beach, Navio Beach and the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse in the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.
