Suomenlinna Fortress

Suomenlinna Fortress which includes general coastal views

Hop across the islands of this historic archipelago and explore one of the world’s largest sea fortress, its museum and its surrounding buildings.

Suomenlinna Fortress is an 18th-century sea fort with inspiring architecture stretching across six small islets. The structure is well preserved and contains a museum that makes it one of the country’s most popular and intriguing sites. Relish the stunning scenery of the sea sparkling between the islands.

Arrive at the Visitor Center in the center of the archipelago for information and displays about the fortress. Start one of the walking tours from this complex. Visit the museum for exhibits with relics from the 1700s. Enjoy the quaint setting with cobbled roads that wind around the fortress.

Watch the sunset from this scenic location and stay into the evening on warm summer nights. Purchase food from Market Square on the mainland and bring it to the islands for a picturesque picnic.

The architectural highlight is the King’s Gate, with its outdoor staircase and intricate stone design. See the canons from the Russian reign that guard the perimeter of the fortress. Gaze up at the iconic green dome of the Suomenlinna Church, which also serves as a lighthouse for air and sea traffic. Among the oldest buildings in the city is the Bastion Zander. See its flag that was first hoisted in 1918 to mark Finnish independence.

Learn the history of this fascinating fortress, which was constructed in 1748 by Field Marshal Count Augustin Ehrensvärd. Enjoy a meal at one of the cafés and restaurants scattered along the islands. These establishments offer spectacular views of the sea and adjacent islands. Try Café Piper, which has been open since 1928.

The fortress remains open at all times year-round. Enter and take a look around for free. Guided tours in English are provided daily in summer and on weekends in winter.

The Suomenlinna Fortress is on its namesake archipelago a little to the southeast of Helsinki. Ride the ferry, which departs regularly from dawn until the early hours of the following morning. The crossing comes at a small fee and only takes around 15 minutes.
