Listen to enthralling tales of an ancient city atop a mountain, as you peruse temples, tombs and a theater from another millennium.

The wonder of Termessos is an ancient city built into the mountains near Antalya. At its highest point it reaches 5,462 feet (1,665 meters), dwarfing the surrounding mountains. The city is known for being extremely well preserved after having been founded by the Solims more than 2,000 years ago. Visit the national park full of picturesque natural wonders and exotic trees and plants which surrounds the city.

Hire a tour guide, available at the national park’s entrance. Travel with your guide up to the ancient city and listen to stories about the former inhabitants. Learn how the Solims lived when they first arrived on this mountain thousands of years ago. Hear legends involving Alexander the Great and other famous names from Ancient Greece.

As you walk around the ruins, read the plaques that reveal interesting facts about each spot. See temples and monuments dedicated to the gods. The Monumental Tomb is one of the main highlights. The giant theater and ancient cemeteries should not be missed either. Examine the cistern and drainage systems to see how these ancient peoples managed their water and waste.

The Güllük Dagi National Park encloses the city. Discover its intriguing flora and fauna and take photos of the awe-inspiring mountainous scenery. Bring enough water and snacks for your hikes, which may last for several hours in intense heat. Visit the restaurant near the park’s entrance beside a snack shop, a café and restrooms. Peruse the small museum’s exhibits of items and photos relating to the ruins of Termessos.

It is said that Alexander the Great failed in his attempt to conquer the towering city. However, you can now visit both the ancient city and the national park for a fee. The park is open from morning until evening, with an earlier closing time in the winter season.

Termessos is located 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) northwest of Antalya. Rent a car to enjoy the scenic 1-hour journey through mountains and valleys. Buses and tour coaches take passengers to the ancient city.
