Admire the range of Gothic and Romanesque styles in the artistic displays that decorate the walls of this reconstructed convent.

The Met Cloisters is an art museum showcasing medieval works inside a rebuilt monastery. Part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the historic structure’s gallery specializes in European medieval architecture and the decorative arts. Stroll through the various chambers of the cloisters for an understanding of the eclectic styles and periods.

Browse some of the 2,000 works of art and architectural features. The buildings of the cloisters are spread out across 4 acres (1.6 hectares) of scenic hilly terrain along the Hudson River. Rent an audio guide player at the entrance to the museum for a more comprehensive study of the works on display.

The museum contains intriguing features relocated from four French medieval abbeys. Visit the exhibits of Cuxa, Saint-Guilhem, Bonnefont and Trie to learn about their individual characteristics. Marvel at the intricate colonnades, sculptures and fountains. Relax in the serene reconstructed medieval gardens dotted around the cloisters. This iconic New York landmark has been used as a setting for several movies, including Coogan’s Bluff.

Explore the Gothic Chapel for its spectacular stained-glass windows, ribbed vaults and buttresses. The Fuentidueña Chapel, the largest room in the museum, is known for its large oak doors adorned with animal sculptures. Wander through the vast doorways of the Romanesque Hall to reach the Langon Chapel, which has stunning carvings of the Coronation of the Virgin.

Consider visiting the other sections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including the Met Fifth Avenue and the Met Breuer. Pay what you want to enter the three museums. The suggested admission fee is lower for seniors, students and kids. The museum opens daily year-round, except major holidays, from morning until late afternoon.

Find The Met Cloisters in the Inwood area at the northern end of Upper Manhattan. Take the subway to Dyckman Street and walk west for several minutes to get here.
