Traders Village showing rides

Spend an afternoon hunting for bargains and soaking up the carnival atmosphere at this huge weekend flea market.

Some 1,500 vendors set up stalls at Traders Village on Saturdays and Sundays, alongside rides, restaurants and bars. The place quickly fills with locals and tourists who come to look for treasures, grab a bite to eat, or have a drink and catch some live music.

Much of what’s sold at this eclectic open-air flea market is pre-loved. If you believe one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, you’ll need more than a chest to get your loot home. Sift through piles of goods, from unique jewelry, furniture and clothing to electronics, tools and antiques. Don’t be afraid to haggle to get the best bargains. Souvenir hunters will appreciate the vendors selling hand-made Native American art and craft, as well as hats and T-shirts. No doubt about it, this is a great place to come for gifts to take home to friends and family. Make sure you bring cash, as many of the stalls won’t take cards.

There’s a lot more than just bargains to be found at Traders Village. The area is lined with bars and dotted with food and drink stalls. You’ll find cold drinks and ice creams during summer, and special baked goods and other treats during the holiday season. Stop for a cold beer or take one with you as you browse. Munch on a hotdog or spicy tortilla, or stop for lunch at a restaurant and spend some time people-watching. The markets bring more than a million visitors each year, and you’re bound to spot some interesting local characters.

A handful of children’s rides – including a carousel, trackless family train, dune and pendulum ride – give the markets a festive carnival atmosphere. Pay per ride or buy a daily unlimited ride pass.

Throughout the year there are a wide array of events, so check the schedule on Traders Village website. Native American Pow Wows, Chili Cookoffs and car shows are all typically on the calendar. Even if there’s no special event, there’s always live music and other fun that make for a great family atmosphere.

Traders Village is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of downtown. There is plenty of on-site parking.
