Wander down this elegant street to discover places of interest, including a centuries-old café, grand palaces and luxury fashion stores.

Via Condotti (officially Via dei Condotti) is a chic retail district situated in the heart of Rome’s historic center. It connects Largo Carlo Goldoni with Piazza di Spagna, where you’ll find the world-famous Spanish Steps. During the Roman era, Via Condotti served to help pilgrims traveling along the River Tiber to reach Pincian Hill. Later on it became a favorite hangout among luminaries such as Giacomo Casanova, John Keats, Lord Byron and Richard Wagner.

This ancient street is lined with cafés and upmarket shops set inside architectural masterpieces. Gaze up at the striking structures, many characterized by the presence of flower-filled balconies and shuttered windows. Visit the Santissima Trinità degli Spagnoli, an 18th-century church built in the Baroque style by the order of Pope Benedict XIV. Another notable landmark is the Palazzo di Malta, which is the headquarters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Browse the clothing, jewelry and leather shops for the latest trends. Several of Italy’s most prestigious fashion brands, including Bulgari, Dolce and Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo, are located here. Among the international brands represented are Burberry, Michael Kors and Swarovski.

Retrace the footsteps of artists, poets, politicians and writers at Antico Caffè Greco. Opened in 1760, it is one of the oldest cafés in both Rome and Italy. Admire the opulent décor as you sip on a coffee, just as Byron and Keats did in the 1800s.

Round out your visit at Piazza di Spagna, which marks the eastern end of the street. Rising above the square’s east side are the iconic Spanish Steps, a 138-step staircase that acts as a gateway to the Trinita dei Monti church. Sit on the steps and soak up the ambiance of Rome. In the center of the square sits Pietro Bernini’s Fontana della Barcaccia, depicting a sinking ship.

Via Condotti is easy to reach via Rome’s public transportation system. The nearest metro stop is Spagna. On either side of the street, Via Borgognona and Via delle Carrozze are also great areas to shop.
