There are over a million plants, which represent 1,500 species, on display at this desert botanical garden. They are arranged in orderly rows and flower beds set around three, seven-tier stone pyramids. Take time to study the different plants, some ball-shaped, some fuzzy and others that resemble churros. Another highlight is a vast labyrinth of colorful bougainvillea.
Wander south from the cacti exhibition via a sandy trail to the Sculpture Garden. Here, a collection of surrealist stone statues decorates a lush green lawn. Many of them depict bizarre faces, distorted human bodies and Mayan-like figures. See pieces by Gabriel Macotela, José Luis Cuevas and Manuel Felguérez.
Book tickets for the Wirikuta Show, a celebration of the millennia-old culture of the Huichol people, who reside in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. Costumed actors dressed in elaborate clothing and with their faces painted in bright colors perform acrobatics, dances and shamanic rituals accompanied by a sound and light show. During the show there’s an artisan market, where vendors sell the tribespeople’s typical handicrafts. Choose to watch the show only or enjoy a Mexican dinner and open bar, as well.
You’ll find Wirikuta Garden in the Puerto Los Cabos neighborhood and a short walk from Puerto Los Cabos Marina. It’s about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from Downtown San José del Cabo.
