We noticed lot of school kids stayed in the hotel, probably for the American historical context, or that it was just right by one of the main train stops. "We traveled to Otsu on a whim and chose Hotel Koo because we wanted to experience what it was like to stay in a traditional Japanese home. This did not disappoint- the accommodations we beautiful, serene and unusual. The town of Otsu is very quiet, but the people are amazing and the walkability down to Lake Biwa is great."

I booked a single room which is just next to the lift but I could not hear noise from they lift lobby. But I could hear the train if it was passing by the track next to the hotel. "This is a very nice place to stay in a pretty decent location! Sanjo train station is a 6 minute walk and there are plenty of shops and restaurants surrounding the hotel. Two warnings: because it's located around some main streets, the evening and night get pretty loud. Multiple times a night there will be motorcycles and cars revving their engines incredibly loudly so make sure to bring earplugs! Second warning: the hotel rooms (in winter) are very hot. There's a thermostat in the room that controls your own climate unit, but the one in your room is connected (somehow) to every other room too. This means that even if you want the "cool" or "fan" setting, it will still blow out hot air. Good news, you can kind of open the window and you can request a big fan as well. (This was a lifesaver for us because we're from Canada and usually sleep in colder temperatures). The hotel staff are really kind and accommodating! They helped us with everything before we arrived and during our stay 🙂 great amenities available in the lobby too Will be staying here again in the future "

Kyoto Nanzenji Garden Ryokan Yachiyo Established in 1915

"This is a must if you plan on staying at Kyoto! Super easy to find and it a nice quiet part of Kyoto but not too far from the action. My wife and I got the room with an Onsen. But first I’d like to add that all the staff there are super friendly, attentive and very kind. Little Japanese is needed to stay here as the staff is very versed in English. Our room was so neat and clean and our onsen was amazing, we’ve used it quite often knowing we were only there for 2 days, also the food was amazing you’ll get a choice of either Japanese or western breakfast as well as a bunch of different dinner options but reserve in advance at least 3 days to lock in the type of food and time you wish to eat. Overall the experience was 10 out of 10 we will definitely be back the next time we go to Japan. "

"This hotel with its interior architecture and lighting design had a very post modern/futuristic, Ex Machina vibe. Which I loved! The staff were great. And I was very happy with my one bedroom unit. The amenity of the public bath was the highlight of my stay. I couldn't wait to go every morning and see the mini zen garden with sun shining through the sky light. As that was the focal point because the public bath was usally dark with low dimmed sconce lights. Will love to stay in the other Granbell hotels in other prefecture's of Japan in the future!"

"Loved the Celestine. The facilities were spotless and the staff were so lovely. The location is amazing as well. We did stay in one of their larger rooms but would be happy to stay here in one of the smaller rooms because the staff were so great. "
