Snap photos of the large golden Buddha sculpture that welcomes you to this intriguing dock of opulence and spirituality.

The Big Buddha Beach Pier is a large square full of temple complexes built over the Gulf of Thailand. It sticks out from Bang Rak Beach and contains several intriguing stores, restaurants and spiritual structures. Marvel at the iconic golden Big Buddha statue, sitting in a peaceful and meditative Mara posture.

The Buddha sculpture, which dates back to 1972, is 39 feet (12 meters) tall. It can be seen from a great distance, making it one of the most recognizable features in the skyline of Samui. See how the sitting deity has one hand’s palm facing upward, with the other placed on its knee. It appears happy, with a subtle smile and raised eyebrows. Climb the elegant staircase, flanked by colorful dragon-like features, to get closer to the statue.

Look around the temple and inspect the various statues and opulent artworks. Make sure to wear respectful clothing that covers the shoulders, rather than beachwear, in the temple.

At the bottom of the stairs is a spacious courtyard where you can purchase souvenirs and trinkets from market stalls and shops. Buy clothing and Buddha images from among the amulets and religious items available.

Enjoy the wonderful views of the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding beach. Watch people go by, including the Buddhist devotees who make fruit and flower offerings to the deity. Listen to the chanting of the monks in the morning. Stay at one of the many hotels and lodgings along the back of the beach.

Visit the statue for free at any time. See the Buddha at night, when it is bathed in the warm glow of lights. Attend one of the occasional festivals that take place here, such as Songkran and Loy Kratong.

The Big Buddha Beach Pier is located on the northeastern peninsula of Ko Samui. Arrive at Samui Airport and drive north for 1.7 miles (2.8 kilometers) to reach the beach. See nearby structures, including the Mermaid Statue, the Samui Mercy Church and the Wat Plai Laem temple.
