Rolling hills with vistas of Doncaster’s countryside complement the lakes and nature trails of the park adjoining this 18th-century estate, now a museum.

The majestic mansion of Cusworth Hall lies between vast swaths of scenic parkland on the southwestern edge of Cusworth village. Lakes and pleasure gardens adorn the park, which is fronted by the house’s symmetrical Georgian façade. Learn the history of the estate by perusing the museum exhibits decorating the mansion’s interior.

Amble along the rolling grassy terrain of Cusworth Park and appreciate the views of the surrounding South Yorkshire countryside. Snap photos of the dense woodland beside meadows of wildflowers. The park presents a pleasant picture of pastoral England, with traditional sports games and a child’s play area climbing frame.

Lay down a blanket for a picnic beside one of the lakes, which are habitats for water voles. Green helleborine orchids grow along the lakes, while kingfisher birds patrol the skies. Embark on the 6-mile (10-kilometer) walking trail that runs from the park through the parishes of Sprotbrough and Cusworth.

Gaze up at the grand hall that looms over the park. Within lie the costumes, games and artifacts that shed light on the region’s history. Admire the restored period décor and furnishings that adorn the mansion. Wander through the library, the dining room and the servants’ wing to imagine daily life in Georgian times. Among the highlights are the ceiling frescoes in the chapel.

Explore the temporary exhibitions and attend fairs and themed events. Glance at the trinkets and artifacts decking the shelves of the shop and enjoy hot drinks and food from the Butlers Tea Room & Bistro.

Expect the hall to be open Saturday through Wednesday from morning until late afternoon. It is free to enter.

Cusworth Hall is part of the historic village of Cusworth in the western fringes of Doncaster. Ride a direct bus from the city to the estate or drive between the two in about 10 minutes. Stay in the area to visit the British Orthodox Church and Doncaster Town Centre.
