Gaviota Azul Beach (Playa Gaviota Azul) is one of the most popular public beaches in Cancún. Catch some rays and spot fish while bathing in the crystalline Caribbean Sea. Dance to Latin rhythms at beachside bars and go for uninterrupted walks along miles of coastline. Gaviota Azul Beach takes its name from the many seagull (gaviota) that can be seen flying above the shoreline.
The wide sweep of sand offers ample room for you to lie beneath the hot sun and play beach games. It’s also perfect for children to build sandcastles and have fun searching for seashells. The east-facing position of the beach makes it a superb location to watch the sunrise. Wake up early, arrive before the tourist crowds and marvel as the sun casts the first light over Cancún.
Rejuvenate the body by plunging into the warm water and splashing around in the waves. The sea is so clear that it’s possible to see the vivid colors of topical fish with the naked eye. Lifeguards patrol the beach and there are public changing facilities.
If you’d like some additional comfort then rent a sun lounger and umbrella for the day at one of the beach clubs. Sit back and relax as waiters bring you cold drinks. Order plates of seafood and classic Mexican dishes. DJs and musicians create a vibrant atmosphere at the clubs and the parties often continue long into the evening.
From here the coastline stretches continuously for around 6.2 miles (10 kilometers). Feel the sugar-like sand pass between your toes as you stroll south past Playa Lagarto and Chac Mool Beach. Turtles come to shore to lay eggs at Chac Mool Beach from May to October.
Gaviota Azul Beach is a 20-minute drive from downtown Cancún. Drivers can use the car park at Forum by the Sea shopping and entertainment center. Buses travel on Avenida Kukulkan from the downtown area. Cancun International Convention Center, Coral Negro Market and Delphinus Dreams are some nearby attractions.
