Lake Bled

Lake Bled showing a lake or waterhole and mountains

Explore a quaint island church, climb to the heights of a medieval clifftop castle and enjoy views of this scenic lake.

Lake Bled is a large body of water surrounded by forested hills and picturesque mountains. In its center stands a scenic island full of green plants and a charming church. Hike the perimeter of the lake through its varied foliage to encounter a medieval castle and many excellent viewpoints.

Atop a steep cliff on the northern shore of the lake is Bled Castle. Visit its museum to learn about the history of Bled. See the Romanesque tower that dates back to the 11th century. Climb to the top of the castle for excellent views of Lake Bled and its island church.

To reach the island, ride the pletna boat, a gondola-like vessel native to Bled with a roof and just one rower. The pletna picks up passengers from the park in Mlino on the lake’s southern shore. Spend some time on the island exploring the 17th-century church. Admire the remaining parts of frescoes that depict the Virgin Mary’s life. Visit the bell tower to see the complex clock mechanism and have a good view of the lake.

Rent a boat to row across the lake and appreciate the silence in this tranquil setting. Stroll along the Bled Promenade, a charming path flanked by trees. Admire the changing colors of the leaves in fall and the white glow of snow in winter.

Learn about the geological origins of the lake, which was formed by a glacier and a natural tectonic hollow. It is nearly 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) long and 4,500 feet (1,400 meters) wide. The World Rowing Championship has been held at this lake several times.

Stay at one of the hotels that surround the lake. Certain hotels on the northeastern shore make use of thermal springs for their pools. Boat rentals and trips to the island have a small fee.

Find Lake Bled in the heart of the Julian Alps in the southwestern part of Bled in the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia. Fly to Ljubljana International Airport, which is a 30-minute drive southeast from the lake.

Visit early in the morning before it gets too full . 9 am is a good time . Be prepared for a minimum of 70 steps up to the church on the island and the walk up to and down from the castle is very steep and hard for people with mobility issues

Nice lake, we spent a bit of time on the Lido. Lots of amenities and very picturesque but quite busy.

Walk to the other side behind the island first thing in the morning (around 8.30am) no one is out and the lake piers to jump and swim off are all yours!
