Take respite from the city heat by day and dance to the charming rhythms of marimba music during the evening.

Come to the colonial-style Marimba Park (Parque de la Marimba) famous for its nightly live music and communal dance events. Marimba Park takes its name from the marimba, which is the emblematic instrument of Chiapa state. The park features a symmetrical layout with a central bandstand and decorative gardens interspersed by paved walkways.

During the daytime the park is a pleasant place to sit and enjoy people-watching. Observe as businessmen, courting couples, families and street vendors come to find shade from the hot sun. Admire the thick trunks and bowing branches of the many trees. Notice the intricate detail of the wrought iron benches, fences and streetlamps.

In the evening visit the park as it changes from a quiet oasis to the beating heart of Tuxtla’s marimba culture. The marimba is a xylophone-like percussion instrument of African origin that is popular throughout Mexico and Guatemala. Bands set up on the bandstand and draw regular dancers and passersby into the park with their soulful sounds. Traditionally consisting of percussion musicians, some of the bands also incorporate saxophones and vocals.

Choose between watching the action from one of the benches or joining the hordes of dancers, both young and old. Women clothed in traditional Mexican dresses, costumed stilt walkers and balloon sellers add further color to the carnival atmosphere.

If you get hungry purchase food from the market stalls. Sample esquites, which are bowls of sautéed sweetcorn topped with a combination of cream cheese, hot sauce, lime juice and mayonnaise. Cotton candy, fresh fruit and pizza slices are other snacks generally offered. Bars, cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating areas line the park’s perimeter.

Walk to Marimba Park in just 15 minutes from Plaza Civica. Metered parking is available on the surrounding streets. Opposite the park’s southwestern corner is the Museo de la Marimba, where you can learn about the history and evolution of marimba. The museum is open daily.
