Visit this elegant church to admire its neoclassical interior, listen to bells chiming on the hour and watch a spectacular sound and light show.

San Marcos Cathedral (Catedral de San Marcos) is a graceful religious landmark and the spiritual heart of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Mingle with the city’s devotees, browse displays of sacred statues and watch a multimedia presentation, which showcases aspects of Mexican history and culture. San Marcos Cathedral stands on the site of a 16th-century Dominican monastery.

The cathedral’s exterior is sparkling white and reflects the colonial style of architecture. The façade features a low-key entrance flanked by columns, above which are bells set at different levels. To the left side is a bell tower with a carillon of 48 bells. Listen as the bells chime on the hour and watch as they are accompanied by statues of the apostles parading around a platform.

Arrive in the evening to enjoy the superb multimedia show. Colorful images illuminate the façade and highlight aspects of Mexico’s and Chiapa’s indigenous cultures, music traditions and wildlife. See representations of Mayan activities, the Bonampak temple murals and jungle plants. A projection of a marimba plays in time to the soothing sounds of marimba songs.

Step inside the cathedral to find a long nave facing toward a decorative altar. Note the intricate detail of the main and side doors in addition to the stained-glass windows. Figures of biblical characters, such as St. Mark, the patron saint of Tuxtla, stand in the alcoves.

A pleasant square with a bandstand, fountains and flowerbeds surrounds the cathedral. Observe as locals sit to have their footwear polished by shoe shiners. Market vendors often set up stalls here and sell clothing and regional handicrafts.

The cathedral is located in the southern section of Plaza Civica. Bars, fast-food diners and restaurants line the neighboring streets. Visit nearby city attractions including the Coffee Museum and the Museo de la Ciudad.

San Marcos Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. Come for the sound and light show, which takes place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with two presentations nightly.
