Admire the fascinating geometric proportions of this ancient tomb that was fit for a king and view the picturesque park from the balcony.

The Mausoleum of Theodoric is a structure of intriguing architectural design, divided into two decagonal layers. It was built in the 6th century by the Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great, whose remains were initially entombed within, before later being removed.

Gaze up at the monolithic dome topping the structure, which is made from Istrian stone. Crowning the dome are 12 arches displaying the names of apostles and evangelists. See the mausoleum at night, when it glows with light.

Enter the lower part of the structure through its large rectangular door to find yourself in what was probably a chapel for religious services. Climb to the upper floor via an external staircase. Here a circular tub may once have contained the king’s remains. Some say, however, that this porphyry stone container is too simple to be the tomb of Theodoric the Great.

Venture onto the terrace that wraps around the upper floor and enjoy the views of the green park surrounding the old tomb. Hear how the Byzantine leader Belisarius later took charge of Ravenna and had Theodoric’s bones removed and scattered. The mausoleum was converted first into an oratory and later a lighthouse.

Stroll along the paths meandering through the Theodoric Park and people watch from one of the cafés and bars. Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic on the grassy fields or relax in the sun in summer.

The mausoleum opens daily from morning until evening in summer, with earlier closing times in winter. Buy a ticket to enter the structure. Consider a combined ticket that includes other historic attractions in Ravenna.

Find the Mausoleum of Theodoric in the northeastern corner of Ravenna’s historic center. Arrive at the city’s railway station and walk north for 15 minutes to get here. You’ll pass Rocca Brancaleone Ravenna public park and the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista.
