Museum of Natural Sciences

Walk the halls of the biggest natural history museum in Spain, home to thousands of specimens from across the country, its former colonies and the wider world.

The Museum of Natural Sciences (Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales) had its beginnings in the Royal Cabinet of Natural History established by King Carlos III in the early 1770s. It’s been through several iterations since then, and today counts everything from dinosaur skeletons to geological specimens and even history paintings among its collection. Set aside at least half a day to see everything on display. Kids will love the dinosaur skeletons and huge range of life-like stuffed animals. Check out the Hall of Birds and Mammals for a look at some of the most amazing creatures from around the world. You’ll learn about monkeys from South America, animals from all around Spain and Europe, as well as leopards, penguins and many other species. Move on to the Minerals, Fossils and Evolution exhibit. There’s a fascinating selection of meteorites, minerals and rock formations to help visitors learn about the incredible history of our planet. See fossils, skeletons of giant mammals like the megatherium and information about the evolution of humans, dinosaurs and other life on earth. Learn about Mediterranean wildlife at a series of exhibits covering both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Admire the giant squid model, be absorbed by the detailed dioramas and play games at one of many interactive terminals. Outside you’ll find the Mediterranean Forest Educational Garden, where you can see plants native to areas all around Spain. Wander through the Garden of Stones to see various types of wood fossils. The Museum of Natural Sciences is in central Madrid and the nearest metro station is Nuevos Ministerios. The museum is open every day except national holidays and there is an admission fee.
