Admire the fading grandeur of this 16th-century palace, which forms part of a striking Renaissance complex complete with an artistic fountain.

Palazzo Chigi-Albani is a striking architectural landmark set amid Soriano nel Cimino’s historic center. It dates back to the mid-1500s and was a former residence of the noble Albani and Chigi families. Built on the designs of Italian architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, the palace is a key feature of the town’s Renaissance heart. Today, much of Palazzo Chigi-Albani is in need of restoration but it’s worth visiting to envisage its former splendor and see its impressive fountain.

From the street that approaches the palaces it’s possible to appreciate the decorations of its façade. Pay attention to the large windows, each framed by pilasters and topped with pediments. Note the sculpted amphora that add ornamentation to the façade’s multiple niches.

One of the palace’s most valuable aspects is the Papacqua Fountain, which is fed by a spring that flows from rocks behind the building. It features sculptures that depict allegorical and biblical scenes, including Moses surrounded by Hebrews. Spot a shepherd playing a flute, a huge goddess and statues that portray the four seasons.

The palace is open to the public, although the opening hours are limited. Ask for details at the tourist information office situated on Piazza Umberto I.

The palace is located in Soriano nel Cimino’s medieval old town and a short walk from other major attractions. Visit centuries-old landmarks such as Orsini Castle, the Cathedral of St. Nicolas of Bari and the Church of St. Eutizio. Spend some time exploring the weaving old town streets lined with boutiques, galleries, ice cream parlors, taverns and trattorias. Drink in the town’s charming atmosphere from the café terraces that frame the many squares.

If coming to Soriano nel Cimino by car then you’ll find ample parking on Via Roma, which is a 15-minute walk from Palazzo Chigi-Albani. Public buses connect the town with nearby Viterbo and Orte.
