Explore one of the largest and oldest markets in Italy before venturing into the spectacular Palazzo della Ragione, home to famous frescoes.

Piazza delle Erbe is in many ways the natural hub of Padova. This scenic square is home to one of the city’s most recognizable buildings, the vast and opulent Palazzo della Ragione. The square also hosts one of the city’s other major landmarks, the lively market that has been held here for over eight centuries. Come to Piazza delle Erbe to learn about Padova’s history and traditions while you browse a market that remains very busy in the present day.

The square has long held a central role in the affairs of the city. The 13th-century Palazzo della Ragione was originally built as Padova’s seat of justice, where the city council’s assembly met and decisions were made on criminal cases and legislative matters. Look around the bustling square today and try to imagine it as it was in those early days, when darker community gatherings were held here as well as markets. Public executions were common then, taking place here, just outside the palace.

The grand façade of the Palazzo della Ragione is impressive, with its stately Romanesque columns. Step inside, however, to see the building’s most renowned feature, its Great Hall. This huge, high-ceilinged room is covered from top to bottom with bright, detailed frescoes dating back to the 15th century. The elaborate images are rich with astrological symbolism. In the center of the room stands a huge wooden horse statue, which is also many centuries old.

Head back out into the square to enjoy the spirit and character of the market. Sample juicy strawberries and other fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally. Take away specialty wines, pastas and risotto mixes for yourself or as gifts. When you have had enough shopping, relax at one of the charming restaurants and bars with outdoor seating in the square. Have a bright orange Aperol spritz, a favorite Italian cocktail.

Walk to Piazza delle Erbe from the city’s main train station in under 20 minutes. Stroll at a leisurely pace and appreciate the sights and sounds of the beautiful Old Town as you go. The market is open every day except Sunday.
