We loved the property itself. It was quiet and very unique. It was very clean and staff were lovely. The reason for a lower review is that there was no self serve areas for drinks(pop) or coffee and you even had to be served at the snack bar. You had to go and order pop and coffee and really you were only able to get a coffee at meal time when the restaurant was open or you had to pay in the front lobby, which I thought was a little absurd.

Amazing hotel grounds, it's like staying in a jungle. Cute agoutis (local rodents) running around. At the time of our visit it had the best beach among the neighbouring resorts. All the other hotels had ugly sandbags everywhere to prevent the sand erosion. The resort has 2 other properties in Playa del Carmen, there are free shuttles all day long, definitely worth a visit, altough the beach is not as nice (many small boats spoil the view). This hotel is in a very secure gated district with restricted access, altough the beach vendors selling crappy sunglasses and vapes somehow can get in... There are some convenience shops a few minutes walk away. If you are into jogging, the main road around the whole gated area is 5.7km/3.5mi long. Rooms are serviced each day with fresh towels, beds are made, mini bar refilled. (Top tip: if you want extra beers, leave a note with a few $) The buffet meals were variable enough during our 10 days, never had the feeling that we're eating the same foods. We booked all inclusive premium so we could swap our buffet dinner to the other 2 restaurants on site. One is Mexican local cuisine, the other is Italian. We had some rainy days, you can get a free umbrella from the reception desk. Another tip: before breakfast reserve some sunbeds by putting down your towels, otherwise they could be gone by the time you want to go to the beach.

It was very refreshing to be at a small resort among the giants. The dining is limited and although there was a kids club, there were no kids for my kiddo to play with. We were there for 10 days and by the end we felt like we were over staying our welcome with the service staff.

There were quite a few issues at the Reef Playacar. The staff at the buffet were very unfriendly. You had to get up at 7 am to put towels down for a spot on the beach or pools. There isn’t enough seating at all for everyone who stays there. We paid for premium and there weren’t any of those available either. People left their towels the entire day and never showed up to use the chairs. We’ve done a lot of all inclusive vacations and the food at the buffet was the worst we’ve experienced. There are two restaurants on site and once again you needed to get up at 7 am to get reservations the day of. We ate at one of them but were never able to get a reservation at the other one. We did eat at a restaurant at a sister hotel which was good. I wouldn’t stay here again.

The only thing hot was the coffee and the soup. Everything else was luke warm at best. Regardless of the meal. Started out with no hot water bu they did fix that. My stay had bugs in the room pretty well the whole time. The maid tried to get rid of them and I did not see a bug for 1 day, but then they came back. They should have sprayed the unit.

I’ll start with the positives. The staff was friendly, the beach was beautiful and buffet food was good, late night tacos and the ice cream were great. The reasons I’m not giving 5 stars are these… no pool activities, typically the pools at resorts we stay at are fun and entertaining. There was absolutely nothing going on at the pool and no one swimming all 4 days and the weather was good. Our room was located in building 2 near the theater and the walls were thin as paper, it was impossible to sleep with music going on late and drunk people screaming until 1am or later. The nightly entertainment is not up to par with other resorts, and it’s kind of hard to find out what’s going on throughout the day. The only restaurant we tried that required a reservation was Mexican and we were there over 2 hours and left before the dessert came, we received a small course of food every 45 minutes that took about 2 minutes to eat, we were starving and went to the buffet instead. Our room shower had no water pressure and the door latch was broken. The ceiling fan didn’t work and the blind for the window was missing and laying in the closet. Typically I give 5 stars even with issues because I know no place is perfect but there were just too many, I would have been much happier in a different room further from the late night music but when we tried to get moved they were much more concerned with flipping the conversation to attending the time share presentation. I barely slept the whole trip.

The beach was wonderful! The staff was very kind and accommodating! The buildings and rooms could use some renovations and updates, but it was a comfortable stay. The food was my least favorite part of the trip. I have to maintain a gluten free diet and there wasn't alot of variety or food options. Some days the food at the buffet was cold, and it didn't vary based on timing of the meal. Great location in Playa!

We were a whole group, friends and relatives, in general everything is possible, but there were still some shortcomings. There was very little fruit in the buffet, almost none, and the variety of food was very weak. The sauna is paid, although in other resorts nearby we have been in the past years the sauna was free. If it were a little cheaper, people would go there, otherwise it is always empty. Also, the jacuzzi is only for sharing members.

Walking from the lobby through to the pool/beach area is like walking through a tropical jungle paradise, complete with a cenote. It is by far the most beautiful hotel grounds I have ever walked through.
