Visit this pedestrianized boulevard to relax in riverfront cafes, take a cruise along the River Rhine, and celebrate Japanese culture in Germany.

At the Rhine Promenade you can dine at beach bars and waterfront cafes, join a river cruise and take part in cultural summer events. German architect Niklaus Fritschi redesigned the area in the 1990s. It formerly contained a freeway separating the city of Dusseldorf from the river. Today, this pedestrian-only promenade connects the Old Town with a redeveloped harbor and is a popular city meeting point.

Walking, cycling, and roller skating are popular ways to enjoy the Rhine Promenade. Pause to watch street performers or to play a game of boules. Visit one of the many cafes to enjoy the views across the river to Oberkassel on the west side of the city. Photographers will appreciate the opportunity to take pictures of the sunset and passing ships.

Join a one-hour boat trip departing from Burgplatz. Guides give running commentaries about the importance of the River Rhine to Dusseldorf, the history of the Old Town and its architecture. While at Burgplatz, go to the Schifffahrt-Museum and discover centuries of Rhine shipping history.

The promenade comes to life in the summer months with a host of cultural events. Japan Day celebrates Japanese culture amid the largest Japanese community in Germany. Watch martial arts displays, listen to concerts, and enjoy firework displays. Other events include a Midsummer celebration and beach volleyball tournament. Visit the Dusseldorf Tourismus website for an events schedule.

Don’t miss the Dusseldorf Hafen (Medienhafen) at the south end of the promenade. This former unattractive trade port is now a modern commercial and entertainment complex. Find home and lifestyle design stores, restaurants, and nightclubs. Among these is the Michelin-starred Berens am Kai French restaurant. Check out the leaning tower buildings of Der Neue Zollhof, designed by American architect Frank O. Gehry.

Located on the east bank of the River Rhine, the Rhine Promenade is within walking distance of Dusseldorf’s Old Town (Altstadt) and major city attractions. Public transportation, such as the metro and tram, stops nearby.
