Appreciate the spectacular views of the snow-capped peak of the Matterhorn as you ride a gondola to this scenic lake.

Schwarzsee Lake is a basin of water offering scenic views of its surrounding mountains and a quaint village. It is known as the Black Lake due to its dark water with practically no visibility. Visit the quaint chapel on the shore and learn about its intriguing history.

Stroll around the perimeter of this fairly small lake and enjoy the views of mountains. Stop for a picnic with your family and appreciate the serenity at an altitude of 8,373 feet (2,552 meters) above sea level. Relax here and rest during a day of trekking through the mountains.

If conditions allow, arrive early for the majestic sunrise or stay for the sunset in this tranquil part of the world. Visit the small chapel beside the lake and stand across the lake to photograph it with its white reflection. Legends say that the chapel, which is dedicated to Maria zum Schnee (Our Lady of the Snows), was built after two walkers found their way after getting lost in the fog.

Ascend the trail leading above the lake to the 19th-century Hörnli Hut on the northeastern ridge of the Matterhorn mountain. Even higher is the Solvay Hut, which is perched perilously on a cliff edge and can be used in case of emergencies.

See the charming village of Zermatt pass beneath your feet as you take the gondola up into the air. Capture photos of the stunning surroundings, which are mostly white in winter. The cable car delivers you within a 10-minute walk of the lake.

Visit Schwarzsee Lake for free. It is open at all times. The lift has a fee and operates during daylight hours. The lake is in a hollow beneath the Matterhorn in the southern part of Switzerland, near the border with Italy. Ride the intricate network of gondolas to get around the mountainous area. Take the Matterhorn Railway to Zermatt for a picturesque ride through the mountains. Visit nearby landmarks in the area, such as the Riffelhorn and the Trockener Steg.
