The Green

A literary-themed pocket park is one of the best places in the city to sit down with a book or lunch while on a tour of downtown Charlotte’s attractions.

A bit like the books it celebrates, The Green is small but mighty. Only 1.5 acres (0.6 hectares) in area, the park is a welcome bit of greenery amid Charlotte’s downtown high-rises. Dotted with literary and geographical references, it is both restful and a place of intellectual stimulation, often used for movie screenings and plays, especially during the summer months. Take a break on the benches or on the grass before continuing on a tour of the city.

Before settling in, take a quick walk around to try to spot all the literary and cultural references. See all the other towns in the world named Charlotte, and in what direction they lie, on the main direction signs. Other more whimsical direction signs are made up of towns that together spell out the names of famous authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Bronte and James Joyce. Admire the large bronze statues celebrating other works of literature, as well as quotes by famous authors.

Look around the setting of the park, which offers good views of the Mint Museum and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art at one end and St. Peter’s Catholic Church at the other. Some of Charlotte’s best food is in the vicinity, so dart away to get take-out and bring it back to participate in a real Charlotte experience. Watch thousands of tourists and downtown workers go by as you relax on one of the mosaic benches and stools that are shaded under wide trees.

The Green is located in Charlotte’s uptown Second Ward, in the middle of its most bustling business district. Bank of America Stadium is a 10-minute walk away. A streetcar line that passes nearby makes the park easy to find from most areas of the city. Drive from the airport in about 15 minutes or take the bus to an adjacent stop in about 25 minutes. Carowinds, a large amusement park, is a 20-minute drive away. Ample parking is available on the street as well as in metered parking garages in the vicinity. The park is freely accessible at all hours.
