Aquarium of Genoa

Discover the weird and wonderful creatures of the deep at one of Europe’s largest aquariums, where sharks, manatees, penguins and a myriad of tropical fish await.

Take the whole family to the Aquarium of Genoa and deepen your understanding of the fish and mammals that inhabit our oceans, from the largest predators to the tiniest seahorses. Learn why many are becoming endangered and what we can do protect these beautiful species for the future.

The Aquarium of Genoa measures a whopping 7 acres (28,328 square feet) and is home to some 15,000 creatures from 600 species. Understand how entire ecosystems work and meet fantastical creatures as you explore the state-of-the-art exhibits and vast tanks.

Allow at least 3 hours to see all 70 showcase tanks, which are home to fish, marine mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Get up close to the great predators of the ocean at the shark exhibit and spot animals such as the unusual-looking sawfish. Meet the dolphins and watch as they get fed twice a day. Or seek out the mythical manatees, one of the world’s most endangered and unusual mammals. It is said they may even be the origin of the legend of mermaids.

Peer into murky caves where you might spot moray eels, octopuses and tiny, delicate seahorses. Watch iridescent jellyfish swish through the darkened tanks and see how many different species of brightly colored tropical fish you can count.

For something a bit different, wander through the Biodiversity Pavillion, where endangered tropical animals, birds and plants can be found. Or venture to the Deep Sea Room for an educational experience using virtual reality. The daring can also whizz 131 feet (40 meters) into the skies on the Bigo Panoramic Lift and get a 360-degree view of Genoa and the ocean.

The Aquarium of Genoa stays open until the early evening every day. It is conveniently located in the old town of Genoa, making access easy. Several bus lines stop in front of the aquarium. Alternatively, there is a car park 150 feet (45 meters) before the Piazza Caricamento underpass for those coming by car.
