DUNSTAFFNAGE CASTLE
The unobscured, views of Dunstaffnage Castle, the surrounding islands, hills and mountains of Mull, Morvern, Lismore, (where Pictish kings were buried), Eileen More, Ben Mor, Beinn Lora, Ben Cruachan and the tip of Ben Nevis, all can be viewed from “Castle View House”. Dunstaffnage Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, dating back to the 1200s. Behind it’s impressive, formidable, rock solid presence, lies an equally formidable history. Brutal battles were fought, won and lost laying claim to the castle. One of the victors, Scotland’s national hero “ Robert the Bruce” lay siege to the castle in 1308 after the battle of the Pass Of Branda.

In May 1493 King James the 1V of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots, sailed to Dunstaffnage Castle where he met with Highland Clan Chiefs from the various regions who made their submission to the King resulting in the Highlands and islands falling directly under Royal control. In 1496 the Royal Council decreed that the Clan Chiefs would be held responsible for the crimes of the islanders. Defiance and and rest followed.

Government forces occupied the castle during the Jacobite uprising. Bonnie Prince Charlie sweetheart, Flora McDonald was imprisoned there in 1746 before being transferred to the Tower of London for assisting in his escape after the defeat of the Jacobites at the battle of Culloden. Her courage and bravery and the part she played in the prince’s escape is immortalised in the “Sky Boat Song”, published in 1884.

It is said that the “Green Lady” haunts the castle. In the woodland grounds can be found the ruins of the castle chapel with a story akin to a Shakespearean drama. In 1462 the 3rd Lorn of the Lorn, Sir John Stewart and his bridal party was ambushed on the way from the castle to the chapel where he was to wed the mother of his son. He was violently attacked by a vengeful relative, AlanMcCoule. . Before dying he was quickly carried into the chapel where he made his wedding vows,, thus securing his sons inheritance.

STONE OF DESTINY
It’s also said that The Stone Of Destiny (used at the coronation of the Scottish Monarch‘s) resided for a time at the castle before it was removed by Edward the 1st to Westminster Abbey.

On completion of archaeological digs and much restoration Dunstaffnage Castle opened its doors to welcome visitors from all around the world.

Serene place to unwind and explore
Four of us (mum, dad and two adult sons) stayed for a week here. It proved the perfect base to enjoy the area. The house is quite small, as per the description, but it had everything we needed and the most stunning views across the bay. The light changes constantly and if you paint, bring your paints. Turner did and it’s obvious why!! Oban is within very easy reach for shopping, meals out, trips to the islands, the lovely Ganavan Sands and more. We had such a great time and we’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Very pleasant stay
Nice little house with terrace / garden and great view . Located close to main road (without disturbance) so easy access to Oban and Glencoe House is very cosy and welcoming and ‘fit for purpose’ , very nice comfortable bedrooms. Ground floor area is small ( but we kind of imagined that from the pictures) so really just for 4 . Communication with owner was very good . A tip for improvement would be to have more cutlery ( during our stay only 4 left of forks/ knives ) and glasses etc and a small dishwasher . But overall a pleasant stay

Fabulous views but a disappointing property
The views from this property are stunning but other than that the property was disappointing and we left early as a result. In particular, it wasn’t particularly clean (crockery & cutlery has to be rewashed as they hadn’t been property cleaned by the previous occupants - a dishwasher would help). Although advertised as having a washer & dryer it was only after using the washing machine that we discovered there wasn’t a dryer, which meant that one day’s plans had to be shelved and replaced by a trip to the launderette. The bed was a small double and the furniture was generally of poor quality and not very comfortable. With this property what you’re really paying for is the view; not for a particularly comfortable stay.

Lovely property with great views
This is a great property with amazing views from the living room. It was very clean and comfortable with everything we needed as a family of 4. Boat trips can be taken from the marina which we would highly recommend and it is an easy drive from Oban and all it's facilities. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Absolutely fantastic stay
We truly loved our stay, the house is beautiful with stunning views, excellent communication with the owner Elizabeth, everything was very easy, even our 2 teenagers loved it, the 4 of us had a fab holiday. Favourite part sitting looking out at the views which were fabulous and ever changing throughout the day. We loved visiting the castle grounds and small pebbled beach areas near by. We also enjoyed visiting Oban and the fresh fish/muscles we purchased were fab. Great holiday and host thank you. We plan to visit again very soon, missing the view already!

The property is actually a little larger than it appears in the photos. The washing machine is a washer dryer, good news for us with children. The view is lovely out across the water. Alas the local pub has shut - the Wide Mouthed Frog.

Idyllic views and perfect Highlands base
Such a lovely cottage and Elizabeth was the perfect host. The location and views are stunning and it’s very easy to while away the hours just relaxing - if that’s what you want. Equally, it’s only a short drive into Oban, with its restaurants, sandy beach, shops and ferry to the local isles of Mull, Iona, Staffa and so on. It’s also a good location to drive to the Highlands. In short, a wonderful place to rest at and explore from.

Wonderful stay in light and bright house with gorgeous views.
We loved staying at this compact and well presented house. It is bright and light and has wonderful views from the rear patio and bedrooms. I loved drawing the master bedroom curtains at night and watching the boats lights twinkle! During the day we were frequented with lots of different birds and rabbits in the adjoining garden. We were lucky to have great weather and sat outside in the evening with a glass of wine and drank in the view! (However, the view is visible from inside too if it’s not warm!) The house is in a good location for visiting the many islands without being in Oban, which we found too busy but very handy for bike hire, supermarkets and eateries. However we preferred to eat out in the opposite direction (Connell direction) in pubs with views and on our last night ate at The Falls of Lora Hotel which served superb and inexpensive food! We took our own kayaks and easily stored them in the garage. Paddling around the island opposite was a nice evening experience, as was a swim! There are some pretty beaches hidden behind the opposite castle too. Elizabeth was a great host and left us a wonderful gift and contacted us to ensure everything was ok. I mentioned a couple of minor shortages and these were rectified immediately. A wonderful week - thank you.

Great Location and View
Great spot for a break with a beautiful view and direct access to the waterfront which is a rare find. Spotless with everything you will need. Possibly suit a couple better although sleeps 4. With having to dine in the table was a bit compact for 4. Very minor issue as we spent a lot of time outside taking in the view.

Schönes Objekt in guter Lage
