Find yourself a spot on the grass, spread out your picnic rug and enjoy the views across Colchester Castle Park down towards the River Colne. In the background stands the impressive form of Colchester Castle, which is what the park was named after. An ancient Roman wall divides this Victorian-style park in to Lower and Upper areas. Come to the park to relax or play, enjoy walking around colorful gardens or be entertained by one of the many special events held here.
The central location of Colchester Castle Park has made it a favorite with locals for centuries. Evidence, such as the Roman wall, points to human activity in the area around 2,000 years ago. Spread over 24 acres (11 hectares) the public park receives more than 1 million visitors every year.
Walk the paths around the different gardens to enjoy the award-winning horticultural displays. Watch people play on the bowling green and see if you can spot the fish in the pond. Relax with a cup of tea in the café or, if the weather is good, wander up to the bandstand and you may well catch a musical performance. The benches around the bandstand offer views across the park and are a lovely place to enjoy a picnic.
Head to the Upper Park and challenge your friends or children to a game of mini golf. If you are traveling with younger children then a trip to the play area and bouncing castle is a great option. Sports fans can take in a cricket derby in the Lower Park.
Stop for a cup of tea and something to eat in the café before making your way to the lake, where you can rent a pedalo and spend some time on the water.
Colchester Castle Park is home to cultural events, such as concerts, fairs and performances, throughout the year. Ask locally what’s on during your stay, so you won’t miss out. The park is open every day, but there is no access at night.
