See artists at work, browse exhibitions of local and national artists and take in the Georgian architecture of this popular art gallery.

Visit The Minories art gallery, which is free to enter, and enjoy the latest exhibitions by a range of local and national painters, sculptors, ceramicists and more. Peek into the studios of the local art students who use this space to work and see if you can pick out “the next John Constable” among the budding talents. Enjoy a break in the walled gardens or have a meal in the popular café. Make sure you admire the architecture of the listed Georgian building in which the gallery is housed.

The Minories Art Gallery opened in 2008. It is run by the Colchester School of Art and serves as a studio space for its postgraduate students, but it also operates a gallery. Visit the School of Art to see student exhibitions, shows and talks by local artists and temporary exhibits by nationally renowned artists in the halls of The Minories.

First admire the typical Georgian architecture of this Grade II-listed English heritage building. The redbrick walls are separated into three tiers and the central column protrudes slightly. This makes it stand out from other buildings in the city. Inside you’ll find high ceilings and intricate plasterwork. Imagine how local merchants took pride in decorating this residence in Georgian times.

Make your way around the exhibition spaces and enjoy the work of the different artists. Chat with one of the docents or students to find out more about the pieces.

Before you leave, explore the walled garden. This is a pleasant, sheltered place for relaxation. Order a meal from the garden café, with plenty of choice for vegetarians too.

The Minories Art Gallery is located in central Colchester and is free to enter. Note that it is closed on Sundays. It is next door from Colchester’s premier contemporary art gallery, Firstlite, so consider combining the two attractions during one trip.
