Confederation Square occupies a prominent position in Ottawa’s ceremonial urban center. Surrounded on all sides by cultural landmarks and heritage buildings, this popular public space is a scenic spot to catch your breath between activities. Take time to admire the monuments, greenery and surroundings during your visit to Confederation Square.
After decades of slow progress, Confederation Square was finally completed in 1939. It is now a national historic site and one of Ottawa’s most important hubs for public life. As you luxuriate in the landscaped square, spend a moment imagining the busy collection of warehouses, shops and hotels that stood here before it was cleared in a movement to improve Canadians’ lives via beautiful public spaces. Join local residents and tourists in savoring the rewards of such foresight.
At the heart of the square stands the National War Memorial, also known as “The Response.” Stroll around this vast and elegant memorial to all Canadian Armed Forces personnel of the past, present and future. Reflect on their sacrifice at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. During warmer months, watch sentries from the Ceremonial Guard in their full dress uniform.
Head to the park’s northern corner to view the Valiants Memorial, an array of nine busts and five statues paying tribute to the heroism of Canadians during wartime. Read the quote from Virgil, imprinted in multiple languages along the adjacent Sappers Staircase: “No day will ever erase you from the memory of time.”
Central Ottawa is atmospheric in every season, but it is especially magical in winter. After appreciating the architecture around the square, walk north to the Rideau Canal. This waterway shines in winter as a skateway and as a focus for the Winterlude festival every February.
Confederation Square is located in the northern part of Ottawa’s Centretown, easily accessible on foot from other downtown attractions. Combine your visit here with a trip to Parliament Hill, the National Arts Centre or Confederation Park. Walk here in just 5 to 10 minutes from the Rideau or Parliament light rail stations or hop on a bus from adjacent Elgin Street or Wellington Street.
