No visit to Arizona would be complete without a visit to Phoenix Zoo. Only fifteen minutes east of the city centre, this non-profit zoo draws in over 1.4 million visitors annually. Lauded for its excellent themed trails, educational programmes, conservation efforts and interactive exhibits, this fantastic zoo is a terrific family-friendly destination and is sure to be a hit with children of all ages.Originally known as Maytag Zoo, after its founder Robert Maytag, the Phoenix zoo has been welcoming visitors since 1962. From the very beginning, this pioneering zoo garnered a reputation for its tireless conservation efforts which aim to preserve the diversity of life in nature. Successful captive breeding programmes have re-introduced a number of species back into the wild including Arabian oryx and black-footed ferrets.Spread over 50 hectares, the zoo is divided into four kilometres of distinct trails that incorporate the habitats of over 1,200 animals. Explore the trails on foot or hop on the safari train for a guided tour that will take you past all the major attractions and exhibits. The Arizona trail features native plants and animals including mountain lions, bobcats and bald eagles. On the Africa trail, feed Jambo and Zuri at the Giraffe Encounter in Savanna Pointe and come close to cheetahs, rhinos and tigers. Head for the Tropics trail and try to dodge the squirrel monkeys that leap around the trees in the Monkey Village. The Children’s trail has lots to keep the little ones entertained. At Harmony Farm, pet the goats in the red barn and play with the puppets in the windmill house. At the Little People Discovery Farm, the adventure playground and gardens are full of exciting attractions for children under five. Finally, if you are lucky enough to be visiting the zoo at Christmas, give the children a treat and catch the enchanting ZooLights display. This dazzling floating light show is certain to render them mesmerised! While Phoenix Zoo is a terrific place to visit in all seasons, it’s always a good idea to schedule in at least half a day as there is so much to see and do, you won’t want to miss a thing.
